Beer Mile

A group of runners got together today in Atlanta for a beer mile. I didn’t take part since I’m going 6 months without drinking. So I took this video. But next year! Next year I’ll see if I can handle it…

The beer has to be at least 5% ABV and in a can. You drink a beer before each lap. 4 beers, 4 laps. If you ralph, you have to do a penalty lap.

Think you could do this?

Have you ever read *Racing the Antelope: What Animals Can Teach Us About Running and Life* by Bernd Heinrich (Recently re-released as *Why we Run*) ?

Heinrich was training for an ultra (a 100K in Chicago – he broke the US record) and as a scientist he experimented all along the way. He really didn’t know what he was doing and ran 20 miles every day right up to the day before the race. Anyway – he decided to try to train with beer as fuel; he didn’t think he would get drunk because he thought he’d burn all the calories while running – so he placed four six packs along his twenty mile route. Well, you can imagine the result – he ended up staggering the last couple of miles.

It is actually a terrific book about running on a lot of different levels.
